Biography
Overview & Research Focus
Dr. Swarup Bag is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. He joined the institute in 2011. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay, specializing in Manufacturing Science.
His primary research interests lie in the development of computational models and carrying out experimental investigations for fusion welding, laser microjoining, and additive manufacturing. He is specifically focused on understanding heat transfer, fluid flow, microstructural evolution, and residual stress generation in materials processing.
Prof. Bag is a dedicated educator, active NPTEL course instructor, and reviewer for several high-impact international journals in manufacturing and thermal sciences.
Key Research Areas: Finite Element Modeling (FEM) of fusion welding, Directed Energy Deposition (DED) based metal additive manufacturing, monitoring and defect prediction in Friction Stir Welding (FSW).
